Robert Parker Report - Settembre 2023

In the latest article curated by Monica Larner, released by Robert Parker The Wine Advocate, featured the new regional report dedicated to the new releases of Chianti Classico.

It is with great pleasure that we share below the excellent results of our wines:

Siepi Toscana IGT 2021 - 96+ Pts

"This top-shelf wine from Mazzei is a blend of 50-50 Merlot and Sangiovese. The Sangiovese goes into tonneaux and the Merlot ages in 70% new barrique for 18 months. The 2021 Siepi (in a heavy glass bottle) opens to sweet fruit nuances of cooked cherry, blackberry preserves, cinnamon and nutmeg. This full-bodied wine is supple and very soft in terms of mouthfeel, and its flavor profile is expansive and all-encompassing. This wine is balanced and seamless, and the 2021 vintage is certainly one of the best editions of Siepi we've seen so far."

Concerto di Fonterutoli Toscana IGT 2021 - 95 Pts

"A blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a thickly extracted wine that carries its fruit weight over a long and velvety mouthfeel. The wine delivers dark fruit, cherry liqueur, spice and cured tobacco. This is a contemporary Tuscan wine with broad shoulders, bold structure and rich texture. It needs a few more years of bottle age to let the tannins smooth out."

Castello Fonterutoli Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020 - 94 Pts

"Made with 100% Sangiovese (six Sangiovese clones plus eight massal selections of the same grape), the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello Fonterutoli offers rich texture, lots of dark fruit and an overall oak-driven approach. It ages in 500-liter French barrel for 18 months (with 50% new oak) and then rests in cement for four months. It finishes softly with cinnamon, baking spice and a sweet note of white chocolate. Indeed, the modern winery at Castello di Fonterutoli boasts an enormous underground cellar with all the latest technology. Fruit comes from the vines in Fonterutoli."

Vicoregio 36 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020 - 95 Pts

"Made with fruit from an experimental vineyard planted to 36 biotypes of Sangiovese, the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Castello di Fonterutoli Vicoregio 36 stands apart, thanks to its very linear and focused style. This site is especially rocky with clay-limestone alberese soils. There is ripe fruit from a hot vintage and ample oak spice over a full-bodied finish. Ultimately, pretty mineral notes give lift and elegance to the bouquet."

Badiòla Chianti Classico Gran Selezione DOCG 2020 - 94 Pts

"With fruit from high-elevation vineyards in Radda in Chianti at 570 meters above sea level with sandstone and schistic galestro soils, the Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Badiòla shows tension and linearity over a full-bodied Sangiovese finish. The aromas in this pretty wine veer toward wild berry and blackberry with crushed stone and peat moss. There is a delicate floral note as well. The wine closes with excellent structure and freshness. This still needs time in the bottle."

Ser Lapo Chianti Classico Riserva DOCG 2020 - 93 Pts

"The Mazzei 2020 Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo shows blackberry, blackcurrant and a savory note of toasted spice. This is a more elaborate, hot-vintage expression with extra heft and pulp. Sangiovese is blended with 10% Merlot and aged in barrel for 12 months. You can up the food-pairing possibilities with this bottle to include wild boar or stewed rabbit, thanks to the wine's generous, mid-weight texture."

Fonterutoli Chianti Classico DOCG 2021 - 92 Pts

"From a vintage that delivered great results across the region, the 2021 Chianti Classico Fonterutoli is a bit darker, more powerful and concentrated than your standard entry-level Chianti Classico. Cherry and dark plum cede to pretty mineral tones. That extra intensity is part of the house style and is a little gift for those who appreciate more meat on those Sangiovese bones. In fact, that grape is blended with a small 10% part of Malvasia Nera and Colorino in this release hitting the market now."
