Belguardo
On the hills between Grosseto and Montiano and next to the Tyrrhenian Sea, the Belguardo Estate is one of the most important businesses in the region.
Purchased by the Mazzei family in the middle of the '90s, the property covers and overall area of 80 hectare, half of which is devoted to special vineyards.
A very special terroir, which is the result of many years of research, and on which an intense vineyard replanting program was started immediately after the purchase with a precise choice of the varietals and clones.
The micro climate is strongly influenced by the vicinity to the sea, with strong thermal currents in particular during Spring and Summer. The soil is characterized by rich structure with Alberese and sandstone rock.
94 hectares of property
48 hectares of vineyards
Dominated by very fine gravel resulting from the breakdown of sandstone and the limestone-clay mix known as alberese, the Belguardo vineyards are proof, once again, of the maxim that poor soils make great wine. Facing south and west, they benefit from their proximity to the sea, which balances out their exposure to the sun’s rays with constant cooling breezes.
altitude
Between 100 and 180 meters a.s.l.
Vines
Reds: Cabernet, Sangiovese, Alicante, Syrah, Ciliegiolo
Whites: Vermentino
A multifaceted winery
A very special microclimate, influenced by thermal currents due to the proximity of the coast
The property is provided with 48ha of planted local vines such as Sangiovese, Alicante, Ciliegiolo and Vermentino, international vines such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, and others are presently being developed experimentally, with plant density of between 5.500 to 6.600 plants per hectare. The entire area, located at an average height of 50- 180 m above sea level, has Sout/South-West exposure and slopes that vary from 10% to 19%. The soil is characterized with Alberese and sandstone rock, and texture that varies from medium mix with good water retention capacity, to ligth sandy provided with high draining capacity.
The micro climate is strongly influenced by the vicinity to the sea, with strong thermal currents in particular during Spring and Summer; it is characterized by low humidity, less rain than the average in the area and a high rate of evaporation and plant transpiration.
The diverse combination of soil-climate conditions allow for the cultivation of quite different grapes, yielding wines with high complexity and concentration, but also extraordinarily elegant and aromatic; so much so that Belguardo was able to establish itself as one of the reference standards of Maremma.
The Belguardo estate produces seven wines: four reds, two whites and a rosé, each of which expresses particular characteristics of the multi-faceted Maremma area.

The Enoteca di Belguardo is located in a typical Maremman country house. Here, the full range of the estate wines can be purchased, and tastings led by one of our expert sommeliers can be arranged, either in the comfortable interior on the al fresco terrace.
