The year 2021 was distinguished by a cold winter with little precipitation. An (initially) cool spring with adequate rainfall was followed by a long, hot summer but with good diurnal temperature variations that allowed excellent completion of the grape ripening process. Worthy of note, an initial delayed development of the vines that resolved itself as the season progressed.
The harvest was extremely rewarding, in terms of performance and excellent quality and health of the grapes going to cellar; these grapes will yield rich, well-structured wines thanks to their thick, but well-balanced, fresh skins.
There was a slight decrease in quantity, due to the insufficient rain during the winter which hindered budding in the early-maturing areas.

One of the first Supertuscans ever produced
Concerto di Fonterutoli, which first saw the light of day in 1981, is one of the first ten wines that spawned the legend of the Supertuscans in a decade which marked a historic turnabout in Tuscan winemaking. Thanks to the enlightened contribution of this mere handful of wines, all of them striclty from the Chianti region save one, the term "Supertuscan" rapidaly gained a reputation in the world as a category on its own, suddenly finding itself up to competing with areas of such unquestioned pedigree as Bordeaux, and adding new lustre to the image of Italian wine in general.
The taste of a legend
Concerto's first vintage was an outright experiment resulting in only fifteen barriques - the very first barriques ever to be used at Fonterutoli - jealously guarded in our historic cellars for eighteen months. At the first tasting after all those months, the combination of the two varietals proved to be so perfectly balanced that they immediately brought to mind a symphony. In fact Marchesa Carla Mazzei was instantly prompted to christen the wine Concerto, a name that perfectly captures the harmony achieved between the two cépages and the faultless symphony in the complex notes of flavour that characterise the wine.
