The Legend since 1981
Concerto di Fonterutoli, which first saw the light of day in 1981, is one of the first ten wines that spawned the legend of the Supertuscans in a decade which marked a historic turnabout in Tuscan winemaking.
A viticulture aware of an yet unxpressed potential, that experimented new forms of training and new blends, including non-native varieties too.
The Taste of a Legend
Concerto's first vintage was an outright experiment resulting in only fifteen barriques - the very first barriques ever to be used at Fonterutoli - jealously guarded in our historic cellars for eighteen months.
At the first tasting after all those months, the combination of the two varietals proved to be so perfectly balanced that they immediately brought to mind a symphony. In fact Marchesa Carla Mazzei was instantly prompted to christen the wine Concerto, a name that perfectly captures the harmony achieved between the two cépages and the faultless symphony in the complex notes of flavour that characterise the wine.

A blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon
The few Tuscan winemakers' determination to pursue new paths without betraying their close ties with their region and its history, made it almost inevitable that Supertuscans would succesfully face and win their wager. Concerto, a blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon, is a perfect example of this.
Its unique character lies in the fact that its Cabernet Sauvignon is not just the "standard" varietal; the close bond that it has forged with its adopted terroir, Fonterutoli in the Chianti Classico region, has allowed it to develop a lofty and inimitable character of its own.
Concerto's Vineyards
The grapes of Concerto ripen in the vineyard of the same name, located in the western part of the property at an altitude of about 350 meters above the sea level. Thanks to the oak forest that surrounds it, this vineyard benefits from a unique microclimate.
The Sangiovese, from mass selections belonging to an experimental vineyard dating back to the 1930s, is cultivated in the plots of Brotine Alto, Acacie, and Scassi. These plots enjoy a southwest exposure and a very rich structure with a high presence of limestone.
The Cabernet Sauvignon is grown in an adjacent plot called Brotine Basso, which equally rocky and limestone-rich soil is particularly favorable for expressing the distinctive potential of this grape variety.
Finissage
The two varieties have been carefully hand-picked and vinified separately, at a fermentation temperature between 26° and 28°C, for 14/18 days (Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese). Both of them have been aged for 18 months in barrel, of 225 l (Cabernet Sauvignon) and 500 l (Sangiovese). The two batches have been than combined and fined in concrete tanks for four months, to reach more balance and complexity.
Vintage 2021
The year 2021 was distinguished by a cold winter with little precipitation. An initially cool spring with adequate rainfall was followed by a long hot summer but with good diurnal temperature variations that allowed excellent completion of the grape ripening process.
The harvest was extremely rewarding, the grapes were healthy and in excellent phitosanitary condition. Early analytical findings indicate a wine with great concentrations, high polyphenolic values on the red grapes and medium-high alcohol content, but with a good sugars-to-acidity ratio.
